THERE’S NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT
The sooner you make the move to a carefree lifestyle, the more years you’ll have to enjoy it.
“I think if I had not been ill we would’ve done this probably two or three years sooner.”
– Linda Cohen-Calger, resident of The Watermark at 3030 Park
MEET LINDA COHEN-CALGER WHOSE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE DEMONSTRATES HOW QUICKLY LIFE’S WEATHER FORECAST CAN CHANGE.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Linda Cohen-Calger on Thursday, February 5th, 2015. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
Born and raised in Queens, NY, Linda practiced family law in Westchester County and New York City before retiring in 2002. She and her husband, Arthur, had to take a break from searching for the right retirement community due to a prolonged illness on Linda’s part but were delighted to have resumed their search in time to plan their move to The Watermark in September of 2014. In a cruel twist of fate, Arthur died suddenly two days before their move, leaving Linda’s life briefly in turmoil. Given the choice to cancel her move, Linda instead plunged full steam ahead, transitioning smoothly into a supportive environment that welcomed her with open arms.
BECAUSE YOU’RE PERFECTLY HEALTHY
It seems more people look for reasons not to move to a retirement community than the other way around. “We’re not ready yet,” is the most common reason. Hidden deep inside this simple statement is the truth. It may be “we’re still getting by,” or “moving, is too overwhelming to think about.” While all of those feelings are valid, so are the reasons for moving now. Reason #1: Because you can. And that may not always be the case. Situating yourself for the brightest future while you have your health is the smartest move you can make. “It was the right thing for us to do and I’m sorry my husband never got here but I think for me it’s wonderful.” – Linda Cohen-Calger
SAY GOODBYE TO WINTER
Linda traded chores like clearing sidewalks and chasing trash cans in the wind for friendships, movies, chef-prepared meals, a personal trainer, wine tastings, lectures, happy hours and a well stocked library – all at her doorstep. “I didn’t want to have to deal with winter anymore and I really don’t. I have everything I could possibly need or want in this building; all I have to do is take the elevator. [My children] all said, ‘It’s wonderful, it’s so great for you, mom. And it makes us feel good, so good to know that you’re in a good place and that we don’t have to be so concerned about, you know, everyday things.’” – Linda Cohen-Calger
TRY IT AND SEE
After researching options in Florida, New York and Connecticut, Linda had narrowed her list to The Watermark. Then a three-day trial visit clinched the deal. “The three days that we spent here, that really convinced me because I could not really visualize my day to day living. I couldn’t figure out what would happen after I wake up in the morning. I just couldn’t imagine the whole day. And once I spent the three days here I had a real good feeling for it so I recommend it very much.” – Linda Cohen-Calger
